My Bio
Vanessa J. Thompson is a graduate of Winthrop University's Visual Communication Design/Illustration program; from which she obtained a Bachelor's of Fine Arts (BFA) in Illustration. As an aspiring artist making her way since her graduation in 2010 into the vortex of art creators, visual stimulators, skilled mark makers, and influential graphic artists, she hopes to find her ground in the world of children's book illustration. She finds the ability to create visuals that have the power to stimulate a child's vast imagination extremely appealing. Thus, she strives to collaborate with various authors and create strong illustrations that coincide with the author's written word. Vanessa also enjoys doing portraiture, especially caricatures; greeting card illustrations and many other types of illustrative work.

She is inspired by several people and events in her personal life, patterns in nature, cartoons, anime, manga, and by artists such as: Naoko Takeuchi, Frida Kahlo, Chris Soentpiet, Scott Gustafson, and David Brown (just to name a few). She also draws inspiration from mythology and the beauty of the Moon and the mysterious universe.

Some say that she is "frighteningly unique" with her strange perspective on things and her obsessive love of vivacious costumes and colorful wigs. But when asked to describe herself, she'd just say that "there's no other possible explanation... I'm just outrageously Vanessa!"

that I'll be a PUBLISHED children's book illustrator in a few weeks! The book project I've been working on is finally being printed and shipped out!!!! The title is "No Fear For Freedom: The Story of the Friendship Nine", and it is about a group of young men from Friendship Junior College who staged a lunch counter sit-in in downtown Rock Hill, South Carolina and began the powerful strategy of 'Jail, No Bail' during the Civil Rights Movement. It is so funny how working on a single painting in illustration class on the same exact subject could lead to me teaming up with an author and created an entire book about the Friendship Nine group. ^_

This is so amazing!! I'm glad more and more people are being exposed to this piece of local history. It all started with an assignment in Mr. Brown's costumed figure painting course, where he created a civil rights lunch counter scene with a model dressed in early 1960s attire. This project made me want to dig a little deeper and led me to discover the original counter which was located at Old Town Bistro in downtown Rock Hill, SC. That branched off into me being hired as the illustrator for a book (coming out very soon) about the same subject, focusing on a group of men from the area a few months later. Not too long ago, Old Town Bistro unfo

Hi everyone! Long time no see!! I kinda forgot my password and then I didn't care enough to make a new one.. but now I'm back!! Sorry about it. I made a new deviantART page : Vaness-n-Sketch  https://vaness-n-sketch.deviantart.com/  because I was too lazy to access my old one. Also sometime in the near future, I'll be going through this account and clearing out any unwanted pieces and starting anew. Update: The book project that some of you have heard bits and pieces about is almost ready for publishing!!!!!!!! My name will soon be printed and I'll be an official children's book illustrator. I'm so excited!! Umm.. other than that.. I have no
